Which kitchen island style is right for you?

It's a great time to remodel your kitchen! A fresh kitchen update will be a great investment in your home's value and your family's enjoyment, for many years to come.

Now you have a few decisions to make: cabinetry finishes, functionality improvements, and general work and share-flow.

What is "share-flow"?

One of the most important aspects of a kitchen is to draw in family for cooking and gathering, and, one of the most important aspects to achieve this is the correct Island configuration.

As your life changes, your needs for space and shareability in the kitchen may change. An island can be for cooking, and it can also be for sharing. The goal is to make it useful for both. Here are a few options for kitchen islands:

  • Single-level island - as the name implies, the functionality of this type exists on one elevation.
  • Two-level island -  also known as a split-level or two-tier kitchen island, this style feels much more customized than a single-level. The different elevations create separate spaces for eating, drinking, food preparation, or any other activity you desire.
  • Appliance-laden kitchen island - these islands incorporate items like sinks, cooktops, dishwashers, etc., to free up cabinet space against the wall. They can also be helpful in smaller kitchens with little wall space but an ample open floor.
  • Large surface area - This type of kitchen island simply offers more space for gathering and serving meals.

Which kitchen island styles you can incorporate into your remodel will depend on the space available and your specific needs.

Keep in mind that large islands are great; however, space to flow in and around the kitchen is also just as important.

Another beautiful aspect of the kitchen island is a chance to contrast colors and textures to add the fresh pop you desire.

These are all important details that a remodel expert can help you work through. We encourage you to look at our gallery and search the internet for pictures of kitchens that inspire you. Once you know what you like, let us come in and survey your space to see which island style will work best.
